Peter Schweitzer from University of Vienna visited CEARC and gave a conference at OVSQ

Professor Peter Schweitzer, a pioneer in research in the field of Arctic, from Austrian Polar Research Institute and University of Vienna (Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology), was invited to give a conference « Social and Cultural Transitions in the Circumpolar North – What is the Role of Climate Change? » at OVSQ on November 7, 2014.

This conference was organized by Alexandra Lavrillier and Jan Borm within the context of "Les vendredis de l'OVSQ".

« Social and Cultural Transitions in the Circumpolar North – What is the Role of Climate Change? »: The discourse about the Arctic and Subarctic is dominated by the topics of climate change and resource extraction. This presentation focused on the social and cultural trajectories of indigenous communities in the North. A particular emphasis was put on climate change, in order to assess what is and what isn't attributable to a changing climate. Other factors, such as language retention, non-renewable resource extraction, globalization, and transportation networks, was addressed as well.
